Most African Countries are Entering Rapid Development Period of Retail Industry
美国学者戴维森、伯茨和巴斯于1976年提出了零售业的“生命周期理论”。他们认为,与产品生命周期一样,零售业态也要经过创新、发展、成熟、衰退四个发展阶段。
In line with the Retail Life Cycle Theory put forward by American scholars in 1976, the retail industry has to go through following four stages—innovation, development, peak, decline, just like life cycle of a product.
 
从发达国家零售业态的演变历程看,人均GDP的增长是零售各子业态演变的决定因素。一般而言,人均GDP突破1000美元至3000美元是现代百货业的高速发展期,3000美元以上大型综合超市开始兴起,6000美元以上便利店业态流行,10000美元及12000美元以上仓储式商店和大型购物中心逐步繁荣。
GDP per capita plays a crucial role in retail industry. Generally speaking, rapid growth of department stores always accompanies with a GDP per capita of $1000 to $3000, and a level of over $3000, $6000, $10000 and $12000 respectively go along with prosperous development of hypermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse stores and shopping malls.

2011年的人均国民生产总值排名显示:有7个非洲国家的人均GDP超过中国(8394美元),15个非洲国家人均GDP超过3000美元,25个非洲国家人均GDP在1000美元到3000美元之间。由此可以看出,非洲多国已经进入了超市行业快速发展的时期,绝大多数非洲国家进入现代百货业的高速发展期。

In accordance with GNP per capita ranking 2011, there are 7 African countries with higher GDP per capita than China ($8394), 15 countries get to a $3000 level, and 25 of them achieve a GDP per capita of $1000 to $3000. It can be seen that the supermarket industry is experiencing fast growth in many African countries.
In Africa, the retail market is given substantial attention in view of its positive impact on employment, economy and other fields.

In 2013, Africa’s retail sales amounted to about 900 billion dollars and its economic growth pace is expected to reach 5.3% in 2014, making Africa to be in the front rank of global retail industry. Market Institute of University of South Africa revealed that in 2013, the average price of retail goods saw an increase of 5.7%, and total retail sales reached 747.62 billion rand, up about 4.5% from 2012. By 2050, Africa’s population will double to 2 billion.

Most people agree that its retail industry will continue to attain sustained growth. In next five years, Africa’s economy is showing promising trends. IMF predicts that in 2014, Africa’s and Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP growth rate will respectively reach 5.3% and 6.1%. African Development Bank estimates that Africa’s poverty stricken population will account for a smaller proportion, dropping from 48% in 2008 to 20% in 2020. Economic policy, trade/ agriculture reforming measures, employment growth and related factors will remain the major driving forces of economy and the retail industry, so will a reasonable population structure.

Market Observation--- South Africa’s Major Retailers to Expand Business in Africa
南非主要零售商 Pick n Pay、Shoprite Checkers、Massmart 和 Truworths 正在非洲各地寻找商机,以拓展业务。
As South Africa’s major retailers, Pick n Pay, Shoprite Checkers, Massmart and Truworths are seeking opportunities to expand business in Africa.
Pick n Pay 是南非最大的零售商之一,已在莫桑比克首都马普托开设首家商店,并计划在今年稍后时间再多开两家店铺。该公司亦利用现有网络,发掘其他商机。
Pick n Pay 把重点放在该集团认定有重大商机的国家,并已完成其非洲南部业务的一项战略目标。Pick n Pay 在集团内部建立全面整合系统,使业务流程更有效率,并且计划在非洲南部开设更多输送中心。Pick n Pay 的策略主要是通过与本地商店合作和特许经营来扩展,但在津巴布韦则设有自营店。该公司管理层认为,南部非洲发展共同体(SADC)区域内存在最大的商机。

Being one of the largest retailers, Pick n Pay set up its first store in Maputo, capital of Mozambique, and opened two more outlets later in 2012. It’s looking for other opportunities to build on its existing presence.
Pick n Pay focuses on countries where the group has identified significant opportunities, and it has already achieved a strategic goal in Southern African operations. In addition, more distribution centers in this region are under planning. Pick n Pay mainly expands its business through partnerships with local stores and through franchising. The management thinks that Southern African Development Community (SADC) region boasts the most significant opportunities.
It has operations in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Zambia.
Shoprite Checkers 在南非以外的15个非洲国家设有161家店铺,较其竞争对手 Pick n Pay 早着先机。不过,Shoprite 认为,利润最佳的地方是西非,而不是东非或非洲南部。
Shoprite Checkers has established 161 stores in 15 African countries except South Africa, having a head start over Pick n Pay. It considers that instead of East Africa, West Africa is the most promising market.
Massmart 集团亦北上发展,重点是在撒哈拉沙漠以南的非洲地区拓展业务,包括在建筑、五金和工具市场引入其自行装配产品业务 Builder’s Warehouse。

Massmart also heads north and gives priority to sub-Saharan Africa, including introducing its brand, DIY Builder's Warehouse, for the building, hardware and tools markets.
Up to 2012, it altogether owned 30 outlets in 12 African countries. After that, more Game and Builder’s Warehouse outlets have been set up.

Truworths, the Johannesburg-listed fashion retailer, will open up stores in Nigeria, Angola, Ghana and Mauritius over the next few years, targeting high growth and strategic markets.
In total, Truworths operates 543 stores, 35 of which locate outside South Africa, including 17 in Namibia and 18 franchises in Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Lesotho. It also holds 35% shares in Truworths Zimbabwe, which has 58 stores under the banners of Topics and Number One. In Angola, where there's a language barrier for South African retailers, the Truworths group joins hands with local partners by employing a franchise model.

南非时区为东二区,比北京时间晚六个小时。
  银行及货币
南非货币为兰特,人民币在当地不能兑换,所以请备足美元。当地银行和Bureaux de Changes均可兑换,兰特汇率变动较大,目前兰特对美元汇率为10.6:1左右。主要的国际信用卡如American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa及其附属卡可在全境使用。
  穿衣
南非位于南半球,季节与国内相反。如夏天来南非,最好穿比较轻的(棉和尼龙)短袖衣服。但晚上较凉,需备一两件运动衫或套头外罩。另外,夏天必须备雨伞。
    小费
在南非付小费没有固定的标准,需要因事因时因人而宜。按照国际惯例,每人每天应付导游、司机每人各2美金左右。以下情况也应酌情给予一定的小费:替叫计程车的酒店服务生,计程车司机,餐馆、酒吧的服务员,客房服务员,酒店的行李员,导游,司机的额外服务等,小费标准一般为消费额的10-15%。
  就医
南非医疗发达,医生水平也很高。但考虑到南非的艾滋病泛滥,建议大家到私立医院就诊;但同时私立医院费用很高,所以建议大家备足常用药,如黄连素、感冒药、消炎药、止痛药、创可贴、晕车药等;年长者也请针对自己身体情况的需要,带好备用药品。
    防疫
中国公民来南非只需注射黄热病疫苗,入机场时出示国际通用的疫苗注射证明。
   交通安全
南非车辆是靠左行驶,市区限速60,高速限速120 ,但车速一般都超过此限,所以大家一定要遵守交通规则:过马路请走人行横道,指示灯绿灯亮时才可通过;有些城市设有自行车道人不可站在或行走在自行车道上,否则一旦发生事故,责任须由行人自己承担。
